DeFlame your food: Aquaponics

In the health-oriented community, there is a deepening concern about food quality. People are worried about the health quality of conventionally growth vegetables and fruit. Theoretically, organic is best; however, pesticides can be used in organic farming as well. People are also worried about GMO foods. Others are worried about the availability of affordable healthy food in the future.

Probably the only way we can guarantee the quality and quantity of the foods we eat is to grow them ourselves. The challenge is to accomplish this task in a year-round fashion and do it within the confines of our excessively busy lives.

I have been concerned about this myself, especially in the context of getting healthy quality proteins. It is hard to really know how healthy our fish, fowl, meat and eggs may be. The documentary Food Inc. makes it painfully clear that, unless we choose wisely, our modern animal products are unhealthy.

I spent a lot of time considering the problem with both the health of vegetation and animal products and was fortunate to come across a solution and is aquaponics. Unlike hydroponics, which is a system that grows only vegetables in a water environment, aquaponics is a unique system that continuously grows deflamed fish and healthy organic vegetables.

Absolutely no pesticides of any kind are used in aquaponics – both the fish and vegetation are of pristine quality, beyond that what can be grown in a garden or purchased in a store. Simply stated, aquaponics is a water growing system, wherein the fish feed the vegetation and the vegetation feeds the fish, creating a perfect ecosystem that can generate an endless amount of food for years on end, with little cost beyond that of the purchase of the growing system.

Aquaponics system can be very small and fit in the corner of a room or they can be large enough to grow food for a family of four or more in perpetuity. If you would like more information about aquaponics, please contact us as aquaponics@deflame.com
